A towel dryer that makes everyday life easier in a family home in Munkkiniemi

The best solutions in a home are often the ones you barely notice in everyday life – until you have to do without them. This is how a family of four feels after extensively renovating their home in Helsinki’s Munkkiniemi neighbourhood in 2022. As part of the renovation, the family chose REJ Design towel dryers for both their bathroom and utility room.

Read on to discover why towel dryers became one of this home’s most valued everyday essentials.

What is your home like?

“We live in an apartment of around 100 square metres. Our family consists of two adults and two children, aged 11 and 17. Our home has both a bathroom and a separate utility room – something we had dreamed of for a long time. In our previous homes, these spaces had not been separate, and we wanted to have the washing machine somewhere other than the bathroom.

When we renovated the entire apartment in 2022, we wanted to plan every detail carefully. Our goal was to create a home that would work well for everyday life for years to come. Towel dryers were part of the plan from the very beginning.”

Why did you want towel dryers in your new home?

“We already had a towel dryer in our previous home, so we could no longer imagine living without one. Once you get used to having a towel dryer, you realise how much easier it makes everyday life.

For us, a towel dryer is much more than a place to hang towels. It also helps dry out the bathroom and keeps the space feeling fresh and comfortable. We knew straight away that we wanted dryers in both the bathroom and the utility room, as there are always damp textiles to dry in both spaces.”

Why did you choose REJ Design towel dryers?

“We wanted the utility room and bathroom to have a consistent look. REJ Design’s dryers brought together exactly the qualities we value: a high-quality finish, timeless design and Finnish manufacturing. We had also had an excellent experience with a REJ Design dryer in our previous home, so there was no reason to change brands. When something has worked perfectly for years, it is easy to trust it in your next home, too.

For the bathroom, we chose the electric Vivo E 40124 model because it fitted perfectly into a tall but fairly narrow space. We wanted to make the most of the available wall space without the dryer dominating the room. Its upright, tree-like design is also ideal for drying towels.

Our utility room is small, but the ladder-style Tango E 50744 fitted in well. REJ hanging hooks were an important accessory for us, as they make the dryer even more versatile.

The apartment had not previously had a water-heated towel dryer connected to the domestic hot water circulation system, so we were unable to add one during the renovation. In any case, we would have chosen electric dryers, as we wanted to be able to switch them off when they were not needed, such as when we go on holiday. This also avoids unnecessary additional heat in small spaces.

Alongside their dimensions, the dryers’ appearance was a very important factor in our choice. We wanted them to look just as good as the rest of the interior. REJ Design’s refined design suited our style perfectly. The final deciding detail was the upright sections extending from the tops of the dryers, which are handy for drying items such as trainers.”

How did you plan where to install the dryers?

“We wanted our renovated home to feel harmonious and work well as a whole, so we hired an interior designer for the project. We told them about our wishes for the dryers right from the start. Because the dryers were included at the planning stage, they became a natural part of both the bathroom and the utility room. They do not feel like fixtures added later, but like something that has always belonged to the home’s interior, style and atmosphere.

For the overall look, it was particularly important to include the dryers’ placement in the electrical plan so that the wiring could run inside the walls to exactly the right locations. We wanted to avoid plugging the dryers into wall sockets and leaving power cords visible along the wall. It was easy to incorporate a hardwired installation into the plans, and the result was exactly what we had hoped for.”

How do you use the towel dryers in everyday life?

“We use the towel dryers every day. Bath towels always go on the bathroom dryer, but we also use the dryers for sportswear, outdoor clothing damp from the rain, shoes, cleaning cloths, hand towels and clothes on hangers.

The children have lots of hobbies, and everyone showers often, so there are always towels in use. There are so many everyday situations where an item of clothing or a piece of kit needs somewhere to dry quickly – that is when the dryers are especially helpful.

We particularly like the REJ hanging hooks, which we can move from one dryer to the other as needed. They allow us to dry several hand towels or items of sportswear at the same time, making the dryers even more versatile.”

Can a drying cabinet replace a towel dryer, or vice versa?

“We have both a small drying cabinet and a towel dryer in our utility room, and we use both a lot. We mainly hang clean clothes and laundry in the drying cabinet. The towel dryer, meanwhile, is in constant use for wet and damp textiles.

Shoes, outdoor clothing and garments on hangers go straight onto the dryer when we come inside. Instead of being left on the floor or hung over door handles to dry, everything has its own place. And the bathroom dryer gets plenty of use for bath towels. In our home, the towel dryers and drying cabinet complement each other: the drying cabinet takes care of the laundry, while the towel dryers make everyday life easier several times a day.”

What if you did not have towel dryers at home?

“The towel dryers have become such a natural part of our daily routine that we barely think about them anymore. But if they were not there, we would notice immediately! There is a use for them every day of the year, whether for drying towels after a shower, the children’s sportswear or shoes soaked in the rain.”
